Steve Loucks

Steve received his BFA in 1983 from the University of Illinois at Champaign/Urbana and his MFA in 1985 from the New York College of Ceramics at Alfred University, Alfred, NY. He is a full-time studio potter, working in the studio he shares with his wife, Lynnette Hesser. Steve retired in July 2013 from Jacksonville State University, Jacksonville, Alabama where he had taught for 26 years and was a Full Professor of Art. His work is included in several public and private collections including the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, Texas, University of Florida, Tennessee State University, and the Greenwich House Pottery. Steve was awarded the Alabama State Council on the Arts Fellowship in Crafts twice, the Southern Arts Federation/National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Crafts, and many awards in national juried competitions. At the National Council on the Education of the Ceramics Arts (NCECA) 2017 in Portland, Oregon, Steve presented “An Easy Way to Adjust Glazes” as a featured presenter. Previously, he was the lead panelist for “Cone 6 Without Compromise”, Glaze Doctor, and Topical Group Discussion Leader numerous times. Steve has hosted the Alabama Clay Conference four times and is active in the Alabama Designer Craftsmen and the Southern Highland Craft Guild. He enjoys conducting workshops on his technique, on glaze development, and with Lynnette Hesser, his wife. Past workshops have been held at Odyssey, Penland, Arrowmont, John C. Campbell Folk School, St. Pete Clay, the 92nd Street “Y”, Workhouse Arts Center, and Mendocino Arts Center.
