Our volunteer Board of Directors and committees are the strategic heart of Snow Farm, ensuring that we deliver strong financial results and maintain the highest ethical standards to be here for future generations.
Our committee members are your neighbors and friends who come together to focus on a specific Snow Farm goal. As a committee member, you serve as a Snow Farm ambassador and might:
- help prepare for and volunteer at our annual Seconds Sale (the last three weekends in November);
- consider uses for and the care of our historic property in Williamsburg, MA;
- based on your skills and expertise, support our Finance or Governance committee or serve as an informational resource for our Executive Director; or
- participate in other special events or activities such as connecting with our volunteer, student, or faculty community or helping with fundraising initiatives.
Our Board members are energetic leaders who support our dynamic staff in every facet of Snow Farm’s work. As a Board member, you will:
- actively participate in the strategic governance of our organization through a minimum of five Board meetings per year, including one in person meeting on Snow Farm’s campus;
- take a leadership role on at least one of our standing committees: Finance, Governance, or Property;
- make an annual financial contribution to Snow Farm in an amount that is personally
meaningful to you — whether $50 or $5,000 or more — or anywhere in between; - advocate for Snow Farm within your network and community; hold yourself, your fellow Board members, and the Snow Farm staff to the highest ethical standards; and
- serve a 3-year term (with the possibility of renewal for successive terms).
Frequently Asked Questions about Serving on the Board
Q: Do I need to have served on other non-profit boards to be considered for the Snow Farm Board?
A: Although prior non-profit board experience is helpful to have, it is not a prerequisite to serving on the Snow Farm Board as long as you are open to learning what it means to serve as a Board member. This background information from the National Council of Non-Profits might be helpful to you.
Q: Can I serve on the Snow Farm Board if I don’t live in Western Massachusetts?
A: Yes. Other than a commitment to coming together in person at least once per year, our meetings are held by video conference.
Q: What is the time commitment for a Snow Farm board member?
A: Snow Farm Board members serve a 3-year term, which may be eligible for subsequent renewals. Quarterly Board meetings (approximately 2 hours each) are scheduled in advance (generally in late February/early March, May, August, and December), with one additional in person meeting on campus in early Spring. Materials for these meetings are distributed in advance and require at least several hours of review prior to the meeting. The real work of the Board takes place within the committees, however, with each Board member taking a leadership role on a committee of their choosing. Committees meet at times, locations and frequencies that suit their focus and members.
Q: Does Snow Farm offer training to new board members? What information and resources are available to board members?
A: Snow Farm provides information to each new board member, which includes an overview of the expectations of serving on a non-profit board, as well as an introduction to the history, structure, policies, and practices of the organization. Records are maintained in shared file services and are always accessible by the directors. In addition, each new Board member is assigned a mentor who reviews this information and helps prepare for and review each Board meeting within the first year.
Q: What level of personal annual giving is expected of a Snow Farm Board member?
A: There is no set level of financial contribution required for anyone to serve on Snow Farm’s Board of Directors. Snow Farm Board members make annual financial contributions to the organization in amounts that are personally meaningful to them, typically a level that reflects Snow Farm as one of each Board member’s top three philanthropic priorities. Board members also participate in any fundraising activity (again, in any amount) where 100% of board participation is important to demonstrate to outside donors and foundations.
