The 3D and Mixed Media Studio houses our sculpture and mixed media workshops, including encaustics, cold connection sculpture, automatons, large scale weaving and fiber workshops, furniture building, leather working, and other mixed media classes.
The spacious, renovated barn has tall ceilings with upper and lower windows that bring in an abundance of natural light. A newly installed garage door helps the space stay temperature regulated by sealing in heat or cool air. Classes in this studio generally have a maximum of 10 students. Students work on individual tables that can be placed around the room in any configuration, or the large communal work tables in the center of the room.
There is a utility sink in the studio, which was added in 2025. There is easy access to a bathroom and water fountain in this building, which is next door in the 2D studio. Browse the gallery below to explore the 3D Mixed Media studio and view a floor plan (coming soon, we recently made some improvements to the space!).
Equipment & Supplies
The 3D Mixed Media studio is equipped to be a multi-purpose space. The large, adjustable height Husky tables on locking caster wheels can be moved into various configurations. Each work table includes a set of tools and an adjustable light attached to the tabletop. When the studio is reset, half of the tables are set against a wall under a bank of windows that look across the meadow toward the dining hall. Another set of tables is set near the other wall closest to the road. Additionally, there is a large communal table placed at the center of the room, and a rolling whiteboard. The studio has a single bowl sink.
Other equipment includes the following: a standing drill press, band saw, dust collection system, bench sander, cordless drills and drivers, drill bit indexes, pliers, jewelers and coping saws, bench pins, rulers, cutting mats, encaustics palettes, heat guns and burners. This studio has heating and several window air conditioning units. All studios are supplied with hand sanitizer, KN95 masks, nitrile gloves and anti-bacterial wipes.
Open Studio Guidelines
During the workshop period, the 3D Studio remains open 24/7. Instructors will outline safety guidelines for students who are staying to work, including any tools that should not be used without the instructor present. The use of power tools and equipment will be limited and is at the discretion of the instructor. Students are requested to bring a cell phone in case an emergency arises and they want to contact the on-site coordinator. As is true in all Snow Farm studios, the consumption of drugs or alcohol is not allowed, nor shall students work with studio equipment when under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The last person in any studio is responsible for turning off indoor lights and closing the doors for the night.
